Roofing Material Comparisons

If you are planning on replacing the roof on your home, there are a variety of different materials that you can use. Here’s a list of common roofing materials that are popular:

  • Asphalt Shingles
  • Wood Shingles
  • Metal
  • Roof Tiles
  • Vinyl Slate Tiles
  • Tesla Solar Tiles

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles come in two different types — fiberglass and organic. While asphalt shingles look great on most home styles, their lifetime cost is higher than roof tiles or metal. The best area to use asphalt shingles is in moderate climates. You can expect 30 years out of an asphalt roof in those type of conditions. However, in sunny, hot climates, an asphalt roof will only last for about 10 to 12 years.

Wood Shingles

Wood shingles have a natural beauty that makes them stand out. However, they are inappropriate for areas that are prone to wild fire. Untreated wood shingles can have a high maintenance cost, but when wood is used as the material to roof your home, it can provide you with an insulation value that is twice as high as shingles that are made out of asphalt.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing material is available in hundreds of colors and can mimic slate, shingles, tile and shakes. Metal also has a long lifetime and warranties that can last up to 50 years. With these advantages, you can expect to pay more for a metal roof. On the down side, this material can be easily dented if it’s hit with a heavy object such as a large tree branch.

Roof Tiles

Like metal, roof tiles are durable and can last over 50 years. Tiles are also resistant to insects and fire, but they are heavier than other materials, and they require sturdier framing. Tiles are recyclable. However, they do cost more than wood, metal and asphalt.

Vinyl Slate Tiles

This roofing material requires little maintenance, it looks luxurious and is lightweight. However, it does need to be installed properly or you can have moisture problems. Be sure to have it installed by a professional contractor who specializes in this material.

Tesla Solar Tiles

The advantage of Tesla solar tiles is that it gives you the ability to reduce your electric costs. These tiles are guaranteed to generate electricity for 30 years, but they do come with a high cost. At a price of $22-$25 per square foot, they may not fit your budget.
