Got a leaking roof?

A leaky roof can cause big problems in your home. Not only can a roof leak cause water damage, but it also can lead to mold growth that can spread throughout your house. Some signs that your roof is leaking are readily apparent, but others are less direct. Here are some signs that might indicate your roof is leaking.

Water spots

One of the telltale signs of a leaky roof is discolored spots on ceilings and walls on your top floor. Water that is coming in through your roof can settle on the other side of your ceiling, where it will eventually soak into the plaster or drywall and cause a water spot. These spots also can be caused by leaky pipes, but if you see them, you should investigate right away.

Dampness

If you notice damp areas in your attic or if your attic insulation seems wet, it’s a strong sign that you could have a possible roof leak. If you notice these signs, you should have your roof inspected by a professional right away.

Clogged gutters

Not all roof leaks make themselves known by showing visible signs on the inside of the house, which is why you need to pay attention to conditions outside your home. Gutters that are clogged with leaves or other debris or that form ice dams in the winter could be causing water to seep in under your shingles. If you notice these conditions, you should remedy them right away and check for any possible water damage.

Broken or damaged shingles

If any of your shingles are broken, damaged or missing, it could present an opening for water to get into your home. If you notice missing or damaged shingles, get a roofer out right away to inspect your roof, and get needed repairs done quickly.

Being vigilant about these signs of possible roof leaks can help you nip problems in the bud before they cause major damage.
